I was going to write about culture,
but have changed my mind. The reason is because of a phone call
I received from Carlos Concha.
The first time Helen and I visited
the church in Solidaridad we saw his name on the church sign by
the street. He was listed as the owner of the property. I
remembered that name from when a man by that name had a Spanish
church in our church in Arlington. My reaction was that might
be a common name in Mexico.
In the 2004 directory of the
Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Carlos Concha is listed
as the Supply Pastor for the Kirkridge Associate Reformed
Presbyterian Church in Manchester, Maryland.
When he called he said that he had
read in a World Witness publication that I was interested in
getting a library started at Solidaridad. He wanted to let me
know that he had recently bought the lot next to the church in
Solidaridad and thought that maybe our plans for the library
could fit in with plans he is developing for building a larger
church on the property.
Carlos had been in Mexico early in
July with a short-term mission team from Maryland. They were
working at another church in a different village, but while
there he visited Solidaridad and bought the lot.
When we visited Solidaridad at the
end of July we saw a lot next to the church that had been
cleared. As Carlos told me, with the programs growing at
Solidaridad there is a need for more facilities. He is drawing
up plans for a larger church building and wanted to know if we
would be interested in helping with the project. I told him to
send me a copy of his plans and then we can talk more.
Below is a picture of the property.
That is the present church building behind the tent like
structure. The tent was put up to provide a shaded place during
VBS. The bare land in the foreground is the lot Carlos just
bought.
Nothing is going to happen soon, but
this is something to pray about and then we'll see what the Lord
has planned.
